Caring for Your Smile after Invisalign® Treatment

You’ve put a lot of hard work, time, and money into getting that radiant smile, so you’ll want to make sure you take measures to make it last and protect your investment.

Studies have shown that without retainers teeth have a high probability of shifting back to their initial positions. The first month after Invisalign treatment stops, the risk of relapse is very high. It can take up to one year or more for the teeth to stabilize.

After treatment is finished we recommend all patients wear a retainer to hold their teeth in their new positions. It is usually recommended that patients wear these retainers for the same length of time they’ve worn braces or Invisalign®.

Teeth are naturally inclined to move back to their original positions, and the bone structure in the jaw is always changing and growing. This is true for all orthodontic patients, whether they wear Invisalign® or traditional metal braces. There is no guarantee that your smile will stay the same, but with the appropriate care you’ll have a great chance at maintaining the healthy smile you worked so hard to get.

Retainers are individually designed to prevent teeth from reverting back to their original positions. They come in either a removable appliance or a wire that is bonded to the back of the teeth. Invisalign® makes a recommended retainer for those patients who’ve gone through the Invisalign® treatment process. Your orthodontist will evaluate your unique situation and prescribe the plan that makes the best sense for you.

Removable retainers should always be taken out when eating, playing sports, and brushing your teeth. You’ll want to take extra care to ensure that you don’t break or lose your retainer. The best place for your retainer is in your mouth. When not worn, it should be stored in a hard protective case.

Our dentist in Everett WA will help you find a solution that works for your lifestyle and your unique situation.

It is important to always wear your retainer as prescribed, this will help you protect your investment and maintain that beautiful, healthy smile.
